Talk Like a Pirate Day
Avast, ye scurvy dog!
Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, so I thought I’d compile a few fun things to check out with the kiddos:
The Pirates! Band of Misfits was just released on DVD. We haven’t seen this one yet, so I’m not able to vouch for it personally. Has anyone else seen this one?
Port Side Pirates with CD by Oscar Seaworthy and Debbie Harter. Song sung by Mark Collins.
Head here to check out the fun song/video. Beware: it’s quite the catchy tune. I may have listened to it several times already. And my son is nowhere nearby. But I’ll never cop to it. Unless you make me walk the plank.
Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Giles Andreae.
My son received this as a gift a couple years ago, and it’s still one of his favorites at bedtime – not only when it’s Talk Like a Pirate Day, either. Very imaginative, great illustrations. A book with pirates AND dinosaurs? What’s not to like?
Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden 48-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle – Pirates – This is one of our favorite Melissa & Doug puzzles. We just love their puzzles — the pieces are so sturdy they stand up to just about whatever you can dish out.
Little Tikes has their blue pirate and black pirate costumes marked down to just 99 cents each! Or get the 2-pack pirate costume for $1.98. We regularly play dress up here, so this would be perfect for Halloween or year-round.
How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long. Illustrated by David Shannon.
Young Jeremy jumps at the chance for a high seas adventures when a pirate ship lands nearby. No manners? No bedtime? The pirate life sounds just perfect! Or does it?
Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC by June Sobel. Illustrated by Henry Cole.
A swashbuckling story of pirates looking to round up all the letters of the alphabet, not just the “R” (come on, say it like you mean it: Arrrrrr!) they’ve become accustomed to.

Darn I missed those pirate costumes! Those were a great price yesterday. Thanks for putting this together. I absolutely love finding new kid books.
