Educational Games

the review
We recently had the opportunity to review Estimation Station from Educational Insights.
This has been a fun one for us to experiment and learn with. This is best suited for ages 5 to 9, but even our youngest was able to start on the early concepts.
We started our activity with carrots, but quickly realized the carrots we had varied in size so greatly that it was difficult to get an accurate estimate.
So we started looking around the house for a good replacement.
Given that we didn’t have anything small and uniform in the treat department (jelly beans or M&Ms would have been perfect here!), we moved to the playroom.
And came across the perfect item to experiment with… building blocks. We picked a bunch out of the bin that were uniform in size, dumped them all into Estimation Station’s larger bin. Then we filled the scoop and started counting.

Both kids were able to help with the counting, though they needed some help adding those big numbers up at the end to get our estimate.
I like that Estimation Station makes it easy (and fun) for us to work on and reinforce his math concepts at home. It also includes an activity guide with ideas for estimation, counting, place value, comparing and ordering numbers, making predictions, graphing, statistics and mathematical reasoning.
This is definitely one that will grow with the kids and we’ll be able to keep returning to it as they learn a new mathematical concept.
We might also have a leg up on all those “guess the jellybean” contests – total added bonus. ![]()
